The European Energy Performance of Buildings Directive Recast 2010 (EPBD) required all new buildings to be nearly Zero Energy Buildings (nZEB) by the end of 2020.
The residential sector accounts for 25% of all energy used in Ireland. European Directives require that all new buildings must meet a Near Zero Energy Building, retrofit targets have been set and a dramatic scale up of expertise and knowledge is required. In addition, changes in building regulations and compliance criteria, continued development of micro generation systems and emerging innovative design solutions require professionals with expertise and knowledge of in this continually evolving area.
This programme, deals with passive solar and sustainable building design, renewable energy systems and air-tightness/ventilation with a particular focus on the residential sector.
The programme is targeted at architects, builders, engineers and others involved in the building sector. Participants will develop an outline design for a new or retrofitted building with the aim of achieving a Near Zero Energy Building.
The programme is delivered online with a total of 2 weekend sessions for site visits and design tutorials.
Course Modules:
- Module 1: Passive Solar and Sustainable Building Design
- Module 2: Air Tightness and Ventilation
- Module 3: Small Scale Renewable Energy Systems
- Module 4: NZEB Project
As an introductory, Level 6 programme, it provides the fundamental skills to engage with the NZEB topic. Previous participants have included Local Authority engineers/planners, self-builders, those wishing to enter the green economy, architects and construction crafts and professionals.
